Embracing Period Sex: What You Need to Know

On the blob, shark week, Aunt Flo, that time of the month - it arrives, wreaks havoc, and then disappears… only to do it all over again, month after month. And somehow, no matter how many years we go through it, it never gets any less inconvenient.

Of course, it also has the worst timing. Hello, girly spa weekend, long-awaited holiday, or the night you were really looking forward to getting intimate.

But it’s fine, it’s cool, we’re pros at this by now.

With the right precautions, we can make ourselves more comfortable and roll with it. And honestly? Period sex is actually bloody brilliant… pun absolutely intended.

It might seem like a bit of a hassle, dealing with the prep and the clean-up when it comes to period sex, but trust me, it’s probably worth it.

Many of us actually experience a higher sex drive during our period thanks to a natural increase in estrogen, and on top of that, sex can help relieve cramps and other discomforts.

Plus, you're already naturally lubed up!

So, while it might feel like extra effort, the benefits can totally make it worth it.

Tips for Period Sex

Consent:

Always make sure your partner is on board with period sex. If it makes them feel uncomfortable or if they’re squeamish about blood (you never know!), that’s totally okay - everyone has their preferences. And if they’re up for it, great! We love someone who's open-minded.

The Setup:

This one really depends on your flow, but it's always a good idea to lay down some towels wherever you’re having sex. While period blood is pretty easy to clean up, it’s nice to avoid the stress of washing everything afterward. A little prep goes a long way!

Keep it clean, and we don’t mean PG: If you're concerned about the mess, shower sex could be a great option - no need to worry about getting the sheets dirty. It’s a simple way to keep things clean while still enjoying yourself. Plus, you can easily rinse off afterward and leave no trace behind.

Protection:

Yes, you're on your period, and yes, the chances of getting pregnant are lower. But here’s the thing - sperm can be pretty persistent. Depending on where you are in your cycle, ovulation might start while that little sperm is still hanging around.

So, it’s always a good idea to use condoms, not just to prevent pregnancy but also to protect yourself from STIs. A bleeding uterus doesn't stop the spread of infections, so it's better to be safe than sorry!

“Alexa, play Ariana Grande - Positions”:

It’s true that sex can help relieve period pain, and that still holds. However, your uterus might be a bit more sensitive during this time of your cycle. So, if you feel any discomfort, make sure to speak up and let your partner know.

You might find that switching up positions from your usual go-to works better during your period. Comfort is key, so don’t be afraid to experiment and see what feels best for you!

In the end, period sex is all about finding what works best for you and your partner. With a little preparation, open communication, and a focus on comfort, it can be an enjoyable and even pain-relieving experience. So don’t let the red flag hold you back - embrace it, stay safe, and have fun.
